Job Safety Analysis: Steam Cleaner

Print
Step Potential Hazard Control
Inspect steam cleaner and work area Damaged hoses, electrical hazards, clutter, poor ventilation Check hoses and fittings for leaks, ensure power cord is undamaged, verify adequate ventilation, clear area of tripping hazards
Fill water reservoir and prepare unit Burns from hot surfaces, spills, splash exposure Turn off and unplug machine before filling, avoid overfilling, wipe up spills immediately
Start unit and allow steam pressure to build Sudden steam release, hot surfaces, noise Keep hands clear of nozzle, do not open caps or valves during heating period, use proper PPE
Adjust steam settings and select nozzle Accidental steam exposure, incorrect settings Use lowest pressure and temperature needed for the job, attach nozzle securely before operation
Begin steam cleaning Steam burns, chemical exposure if detergents are used, slip hazards from condensation Keep nozzle pointed away from self and others, maintain secure footing, apply detergents according to manufacturer instructions, avoid directing steam at electrical components
Clean around vehicles, buildings, or equipment Struck by moving equipment, damage to surfaces Use cones or signage when outdoors, communicate with nearby workers, avoid applying high heat to sensitive materials
Manage hose and power cord Trip hazards, electrical shock, burns from touching hot hose Keep hose routed away from walkways, avoid contact with hot surfaces, ensure electrical connections remain dry
Shut down and cool unit Burns, pressurized steam release Turn off unit, allow pressure to drop completely, unplug power, allow machine to cool before draining or storing
Drain water and store equipment Hot water exposure, hose whipping Wait until unit cools, open drain valves slowly, coil hoses neatly, store equipment in dry area
Clean work area Slip hazards, leftover debris Remove excess water and residue, mop slippery surfaces, store PPE and tools properly

Suggested Personal Protective Equipment

  • Safety glasses or face shield

  • Heat resistant gloves

  • Long sleeves and pants to protect from steam burns

  • Steel toe boots with non slip soles

  • Hearing protection if unit is noisy

  • High visibility vest when working outdoors or around equipment

Always have a complete, well-stocked first aid kit available.
