Step Potential Hazard Control
Inspect drill press and work area Damaged cord, worn chuck, loose table, clutter Verify drill press components are in good condition, tighten table, ensure work area is clean and well lit
Select and install drill bit Cuts from sharp edges, improper installation, bit slipping Handle bits carefully, ensure chuck key is fully tightened, remove chuck key before starting
Secure workpiece Workpiece spinning or flying loose, hand injuries Use vise or clamps to secure work, never hold workpiece by hand
Adjust speed and table height Pinched fingers, improper speed selection Turn machine off before adjustments, follow manufacturer chart for proper RPM based on bit size and material
Don PPE and prepare for drilling Flying debris, eye injury Wear safety glasses or face shield, remove loose jewelry, tie back long hair
Start machine and begin drilling Bit grabbing workpiece, kickback, flying chips Feed slowly, maintain control, use cutting fluid when appropriate, keep hands away from rotating bit
Back out drill bit and clear chips Burns, cuts, flying metal shavings Use brush or tool to clear chips, never use hands, allow bit to cool before handling
Turn off machine and remove workpiece Contact with rotating bit, dropped material Ensure machine is completely stopped, lift workpiece carefully
Clean work area Sharp chips on floor or table, fire hazard from oily rags Sweep or brush chips away, dispose of rags safely, store tools properly

Suggested Personal Protective Equipment

  • Safety glasses with side shields

  • Full face shield when drilling large or tough materials

  • Hearing protection

  • Gloves for handling material only, never while drilling

  • Sturdy work clothing (no loose sleeves)

  • Steel toe boots

  • High visibility vest when working near vehicles or equipment

Always have a complete, well-stocked first aid kit available.
